I recently visited the beautiful estate of Lanhydrock – a stunning National Trust property near Bodmin
Lanhydrock is a beautiful late Victorian country house with gardens and a wooded estate. Only a 15-minute drive from Butterwell Farm, Lanhydrock has plenty to offer for all ages. There is the main event – a true discovery of both sides of Victorian life in the house with the opportunity to immerse yourselves in luxury of the elegant dining room and smoking room, and then head ‘below stairs’ to the servants quarters and extensive kitchens. As quoted on their website, Lanhydrock really has the feel of a wealthy but unpretentious family home.

If you aren’t up for taking your time exploring the main house (about 1.5 hours) you can purchase a cheaper ticket for entry to the gardens, which are magnificent. Featuring beautiful herbaceous borders, a fabulous formal parterre and colourful higher gardens filled with camellias, magnolias and rhododendrons. Most spectacular are the yew topiary in front of the main house.
Alternatively park for free and enjoy 900 acres of estate and woodland featuring impressive tree-lined avenues, riversides and even a derelict Victorian swimming pool (now a popular cooling-down spot for dogs). There are also off-road cycle trails, with special routes for families and novice riders, and you can even hire a bike there.

There are three restaurants with plenty of variety, or stay traditional with a pasty and cream tea! There is a wonderful large play area for children, picnic areas, a plant and gift shop, and free route guides for dog walking and cycling.
Don’t miss out – visit Lanhydrock on your next holiday to Cornwall. I will certainly be a regular visitor from now on!
