Following the success of the Forestry Commission’s Gruffalo Trail, this new year saw the launch of ‘The Highway Rat’ Activity Trail at Cardinham Woods on the outskirts of Bodmin, just 20 minutes from Butterwell Farm.
Cardinham Woods are one of our go-to destinations for a family day out in Cornwall. With biking and walking trails to suit all levels, a fantastic café and a lovely enclosed play area for little ones there’s something for everyone. It’s also a great place to take your furry friends for a lovely woodland walk through native forests and along beautiful streams.

Anyone with a young family will be hard pushed not to be familiar with the stories of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The Highway Rat being one of our family favourites we were very excited to explore this new trail. Join the Highway Rat on his trail through the woods by purchasing one of the activity packs available for £3 in the Woods Café (and don’t forget to stop here for a delicious bite to eat or one of their infamous deluxe hot chocolates – with their open log fire they were voted Clipper’s cosiest cafe in 2017!).
