Buzzard Barn
We completed a full internal renovation and damp proofing of Buzzard Barn on time this June and we have already had a month worth of guests. We are very pleased with the feedback received so far and we hope you will have the opportunity to enjoy the property in the future. If you would like to see the new photos you can see them on our website: Buzzard Barn. If you would like to book Buzzard Barn between June and October please visit Holiday Cottages. For bookings November to March please do so on our booking page.
We will be rebuilding the porch, re-slating the roof, relaying the driveway and landscaping around the outside of the property in Spring 2019.

New additions: lambing and babies!
We had a successful season lambing – they started just a week after our own arrival – a little girl called Clowance. Clowance is thriving and nearly four months old already. None of our ewes needed assistance and we’ve finished up with five female and four male lambs which will bring our flock up to twelve once we’ve sold the rams. This should help Sam keep on top of the grass!
Wildlife Notes
After such a late and cold Spring, wild flowers came later and in a great abundance. This was all forgotten in June when we had temperatures into the 30s and our guests enjoyed some great experiences with deer and fawns, otters with cubs, tawny owls, as well as the abundant kingfishers.
Fishing Season so far
It’s been a tough start to the season due to the very dry conditions with the river dropping to very low levels. We have been much more fortunate than many fisheries though. We have seen a good number of fresh sea trout which have moved quickly through the Butterwell pools and have been difficult to tempt in the dry conditions. Persistent anglers have managed 21 sea trout on night fly to date. Steve Shore got the season moving early in June with two sea trout. The best fish so far is 5lb although much larger sea trout have been seen and lost by guests. The highlight so far was a splendid 17lb salmon taken unusually on night fly by Johnathan Meredith from London. The fish was a bar of silver and was carefully returned after a quick photo. This was one of a number of salmon seen in the Butterwell area. Quite a surprise in such low water! We continue to hope for rain to freshen the river and encourage the fish in the estuary to run the river.

Filming
We were pleased to welcome a German film crew to Butterwell in June to shoot fishing scenes for a Rosamunde Pilcher adaptation, a film to be shown on German TV. Pilcher is a famous Cornish novelist and the reason a quarter of a million Germans flock to Cornwall each year! To read more: Rosamunde Pilcher
