Review for Kingfisher Cabin December 2019: Perfect relaxation and tranquility
What can I say, if you are looking for a relaxing few days/weeks in Cornwall secluded, dog friendly, cosy, look no further. This place is stunning-so clean and well equipped. We loved our daily walks by the river with our dogs, even has a washing machine which means you can pack fairly light (if you want to) i would literally LIVE here if I could. Amazing stay and wonderful friendly hosts, loved the Neals Yard shop in the bathroom-my favourite! It’s also a really good location in which to explore the many beaches, all within an easy 25 minute drive. But great place to stay away from the crowds in the summer months. You could walk for miles and miles from this place as leads straight into a variety of footpaths. WONDERFUL.
Butterwell Farm Cottage Improvements
Landscaping projects in 2019 have much improved the outside areas of both Buzzard Barn and Butterwell Cottage. Butterwell Cottage now enjoys uninterrupted views of the River Camel and Camel Valley Vineyards from its new BBQ and picnic area capturing the evening sun. Further driveway, entrance and parking improvements will also enhance our guest experience.
Buzzard Barn now has a brand new driveway and garden area. Using slate and reclaimed railway sleepers the finish is very pleasing to the eye and has improved functionality too. A few wayward shrubs have been removed to enhance the views to the river and to better incorporate the children’s swing area with the rest of the garden, making it the perfect family garden for dogs, children and families.

Butterwell Estate Updates
At the end of last year large sections of our estate fencing were renewed and some more sections added. With the help of Woods 4 Water we have 750 trees arriving at the end of this month ready to plant along our stretch of the River Camel. This is in a bid to improve water quality and habitat and protect the river bank from erosion and flooding.
If Merlin the ram did his job we should be welcoming lambs at Butterwell sometime around 1st April. Just in time for the Easter holidays. We hope some of our guests will get to experiencing this magic with us.
It won’t be long until we launch our availability and pricing for 2021! Keep an eye out. We will announce it as soon as it goes live along with another Early Bird booking incentive.
It won’t be long until we see snowdrops and bluebells appearing in the woods at Butterwell Farm. We have plenty of spaces for last minute short breaks before peak season – take a look at our booking page for last minute discounts and availability.

Fishing
It’s at this time of year most of our fishermen start to ponder what the new season has in store and we reflect on the last season at Butterwell and some encouraging developments for 2020.
With a very dry spring and only brief wet interludes in the summer, night fly fishing for Sea Trout in 2019 was steady with fish trickling through on most night tides. Most notable was the size of some of the fish with a number into double figures seen. Our first success was very early in May when the first Sea Trout of 2.5 lb was caught on night fly. As usual there were quite a few encounters with large fish and despite several losses a good number of fish in the 4-5lb range were landed and specimens of 6lb and 8.5lb were caught, all carefully released. By the end of August we had 58 Sea Trout in the book. This was quite respectable given the drought conditions which never renders night fly fishing at Butterwell impossible. There was a surprising lack of peal but once again we have seen large numbers of Sea Trout running on the big tides in early September. This seems to be a common feature now and probably reflects the dry summers we have been experiencing. Unfortunately night fly fishermen have generally disappeared from Butterwell by the end of August when we revert to daytime fishing for Salmon. At least this has demonstrated a good head of spawning fish.
The Salmon season got off to a slow start in September in low water with four in the book by mid-month. Unfortunately the rain forecast at the time of the September Report turned into almost continued storms and heavy rain all the way through to the end of the season on 15 December and the river never really settled back to reasonable fishing levels. These conditions proved very difficult for anglers at Butterwell as expected and we finished with a total of only 5 Salmon (largest 12 lb), although catches further upriver have at least demonstrated a stronger run in 2019.
At Butterwell we have embarked on improvements to river flows using organic materials and bank protection by planting seven hundred and fifty trees predominantly on the left/far bank. These improvements together with replacement of most of the fishing platforms and benches will hopefully improve the experience of our fisherman in future seasons.
Thank you to all our fishermen who visited in 2019
