Springtime in Cornwall
Spring has truly arrived at Butterwell Farm, and what a glorious start to the season it has been! We have been incredibly lucky with the weather recently – we have had some beautiful sunny days perfect for exploring the coast, working in the gardens, and enjoying the great outdoors. Our fruit trees are in blossom, birds are busy nesting, and the wild garlic is out in full force with the bluebells closely following.

Out and About – Coastal Walks & Hidden Gems
With the warm weather gracing us, we’ve been out exploring some of our favourite coastal walks. One recent adventure took us along the stunning coastal path from Rock to Polzeath, dipping into secluded bays at low tide and soaking up the breathtaking views. We stopped for lunch at The Mowhay in Trebetherick, a fantastic spot offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a beautiful garden for sunny days and a cosy indoor space complete with a log burner and charming artwork – perfect for all seasons.
Another highlight this month was a walk from the Pentireglaze National Trust car park on the Pentire Headland near Polzeath, featuring the beautiful bright yellow of common gorse in flower. This part of the coast is simply spectacular, with panoramic views and a wonderful café to relax in after your walk. If you’re looking for inspiration for your own walking adventures, we highly recommend the iwalkcornwall app – a treasure trove of routes to explore!
Another local recommendation added to the list this month is the juice bar attached to The Vine Greengrocers in Wadebridge, our local market town, just 15 minutes from Butterwell Farm towards the North coast. You can also cycle there along the Camel Trail right from your property in under 30 minutes. If you’re looking to off-set your cream tea or pint of Doom Bar then I would highly recommend a visit to the juice bar for a huge range of healthy options.
Kingfisher Cabin Gets a Makeover
We’ve been busy giving Kingfisher Cabin a little TLC, adding some fun updates and enhancements to make this riverside cabin feel even cosier than before. Expect some exciting new photos later this month – we can’t wait to share them with you!
A New Discovery at Butterwell Farm?!
For our wildlife enthusiasts…we have recently found lots of evidence to suggest that there COULD be a particular ‘keystone species’ that has found its way onto the River Camel and spent some time at Butterwell Farm! This would be a truly magical development for our little corner of Cornwall. With the help of our new wildlife camera, we are hoping to capture some footage of this elusive new species on the river – stay tuned for updates!
Butterwell Farm has always been a haven for wildlife, and this latest discovery only adds to the wonder of our natural surroundings.
Bird Feeders
After much consideration, we have made the difficult decision to remove the bird feeders from our cottages. We know many of our guests enjoy watching the birds up close, so you are more than welcome to bring your own during your stay. However, we made this choice for several important ecological reasons:
- Feeders can favour certain species over others, disrupting the natural balance.
- They can spread disease among bird populations when hygiene isn’t carefully maintained.
- The environmental impact of bird food production is significant, with many ingredients sourced unsustainably.
At Butterwell Farm, we are fortunate to have a rich natural habitat where birds can forage as they would in the wild. Even without feeders, we still see an incredible variety of birds from our windows every day! Farm Updates – Fishing Season Approaches
Back on the farm, Sam has been busy preparing the river and riverbank for its opening on 1st May – not long to go now! If you’re interested in fishing at Butterwell Farm, or if you have any questions, feel free to call or text Sam on 07766 224258. Night fishing for sea-trout is a truly magical experience – if you’ve never tried it before, this could be your year!
Meanwhile, Sam has also been harrowing the land, an essential process that aerates the soil, improves drainage, and helps new grass to establish. And of course, the endless job of collecting and processing firewood continues to ensure our guests stay warm and cosy year-round.
